The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has outlined an approximately 1.5 million eo emergency intervention programme to fight the Ebola epidemic affecting some Western African countries.
The Italian Cooperation has earmarked 240,000 euro for the World Health Organisation (WHO) to send doctors, medical supplies and equipment, and boost epidemiological surveillance and provide logistical support and coordination to emergency response activities.
The Ministry is also to finance the sending of specialised Italian medical personnel, in particular from Rome’s Spallanzani Hospital, a national and international centre of excellence in the treatment of infectious diseases and, by means of a special separate fund, will support the activities of Italian NGOs working in the region, especially in Sierra Leone.
This contribution is in addition to another of 200,000 euro to the WHO in April for the creation of programmes in Guinea Conackry.
