Guinea: 26 June 2014: West Africa - Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) Outbreak

SITUATION

OVERVIEW

• The outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease continues producing more confirmed cases, particularly in Sierra Leone, where the situation is very worrying and it is highly probable that there are more deaths than reported. the situation in Guinea and Liberia is more encouraging. However, none of the three countries is safe from resurgence in any place and ata any time.

• As of 23-24 June, the average Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is calculated to be approximately 55%, taking into account only confirmed cases and deaths, since the beginning of the outbreak. However, this rate varies significantly according to location, and timing and quality of treatment.

RESPONSE

• In Guinea and Liberia the tracing rates are relatively high and the number of new cases outside the trborder zone has been reduced. In Sierra Leone the containment systems are not yet fully operational.

• The Health Ministers of the Mano River UNION countries, i.e., Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast, met in Conakry on 20 June and signed a declaration to increase their collaboration in the fight against EVD.

• The World Health Organisation has called a regional meeting on EVD outbreak on 2-3 July in Accra (Ghana) that will include Ministers of Health of 11 countries, together with Technicians and Donors.

• ECHO has allocated an additional 500 000 euro to combat the EVD outbreak, reaching a total contribution of 1.9 million euro.
Furthermore, the European Mobile Laboratory is expected to remain active at least until September.
