MARCH HIGHLIGHTS
WASH in Quaratined Households: Providing services to indviduals in vulnerable quaratines household remains critical aspect of the WASH response. The Western Areas Urban (Freetown) has been particularly hard hit. The WASH Consortium with guidance from Government Authortiies have been tracking and responding to needs. It is estimated that:
Emergency latrines have been provided for 10,019 households
Water supplied via kiosks, tankering and other means for 17,013 households
Soap and solid waste management services continue to support over 100,000 households
WASH in Schools: Focus has been on two areas:
(1) ensuring the WASH supplies, including handwashing stations and cleaning kits are distributed to all the estimated 8,600 institutions in the country and
(2) the decontamination of schools used as Ebola Care Centres.
For the WASH supply distribution, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, UNICEF and other key partners, conducted a massive distribution of supplies to each districts during the last week of March.
Distributions from the districts to the institutional level were planned for the first week of April. Authorities and parnters are now examining the distributions and ensuring needs are covered. Regarding decontamination of schools used as Ebola Care Centres (50 institutions). Decontaminatiois reported completed in 30 schools, ongoing in 9 and not yet started in 11. The aim is to complete in all the schools by 16 April 2015.
Hygiene Promotion: In the month of March 31 WASH Partners held hygiene promotion sessions to an estimated 19,377 households, reaching 30,000 men, 32,000 women, and 32,000 children. In addition 1,030 communal handwshing stations were installed, 535 hygiene promotion plans developed, and 4,076 households installed tippy taps.
WASH in Ebola Treatment Center WASH in Ebola treatment centers is provided by the implementing partner managing the treatment centers. The WASH standard for the treatment center is 250 liters per patient per day, as well as access to sanitation and handwashing facilities. Currently all WASH needs are being met in the treatment centers.
