A group of 150 Cuban health workers arrived home Monday from battling Ebola in West Africa, where efforts to contain the deadly virus appear to have stemmed the epidemic.
The official communist newspaper Granma wrote that 98 of the returning doctors and nurses had been working in Sierra Leone, while 52 had been assigned to Liberia.
All told, Cuba sent 256 doctors and nurses to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea -- the three countries hardest hit by Ebola.
Granma reported that 66 more medical workers in Sierra Leone are due to return on April 1.
The newspaper provided no information about plans to bring home several doctors and nurses who were sent to fight Ebola in Guinea.
One Cuban doctor, Felix Baez, contracted Ebola while working in Sierra Leone. He returned to the country to continue treating Ebola patients after receiving treatment in Switzerland and making a full recovery.
The Ebola outbreak, which health officials have said has been controlled but not completely eradicated, has infected nearly 25,000 since it was identified in March 2014, and killed more than 10,000.
