Outbreaks that occurred in the WHO African Region between January - February 2014 (Situation as of 23 May 2014)
In this issue, a general overview of outbreaks that occurred within the WHO African Region between January - April 2014 is provided as well as a summary of ongoing outbreaks as reported by Member States.
Overview of major outbreaks in the WHO African Region
Based on data received from the Early Warning System through the Event Management System (EMS)*, 36 public health events were reported to the Regional Office between January and April 2014 of which 91% (33 / 36) were due to infectious diseases; cholera being the most frequently reported event. The distribution of these events is shown in figure 1 below.
