  • As of 12 November 2014, according to the Government of Sierra Leone, the cumulative number of laboratory confirmed Ebola virus disease (EVD) cases is 4,683. The number of confirmed deaths is 1,160 with 878 survivors. The government estimates that around 22 percent are children and youth (0-17 years).

  • To date, the UNICFE-led Family Tracing and Reunification (FTR) network has identified 3,483 children as being affected by the Ebola crisis (1,734 girls, 1,749 boys) including 884 children who have lost one or both parents to EVD.
This is an increase of 572 affected children from the previous reporting period.*

  • With funding from DfID, the first ten UNICEF supported Community Care Centre (CCC) opened in Bombali. Consultation with Paramount Chiefs and engagement with community members on phase two of the CCC project began in the district of Tonkolili.

  • With UNICEF support, over 1.5 million subscribers of three leading mobile networks were reportedly reached through SMS messaging across the country since mid-October 2014. In addition, social mobilization activities have been invigorated with the President calling on all 149 Paramount Chiefs to lead social mobilization activities in their respective chiefdoms. The President has given 21 days for districts to curb high transmission rates, especially in Bombali, Kambia and Port Loko.

  • Given the unprecedented scale of the crisis and increasing needs in the country, UNICEF’s funding appeal is under revision. Almost 90 percent of the current appeal of US$ 61 million has been funded.
