Abu Dhabi, 2 October 2014: Upon the directives of the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, HH General Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, ordered the provision of an amount of AED 18.3 million in response to the current outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, particularly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia to be channeled through the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
The announcement was made by Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, the Minister of International Cooperation and Development and Head of the National Committee for the Coordination of Foreign Aid, at a meeting for the National Committee for the Coordination of Foreign Aid, which was held yesterday, Wednesday, in Abu Dhabi.
Her Excellency valued the directives of UAE’s wise leadership, asserting that these directives made the UAE in line with the pioneer countries who are countering fatal and contagious diseases which are threatening the mankind around the world, through the cooperation and partnering with the concerned international organizations, on top of them UNICEF, among others.
The UAE response will focus on five main goals; stopping the spread of the disease; treating patients and providing basic services; maintaining stability; and preventing the disease from spreading in other countries.
