7 PER CENT DECLINE IN IDP FIGURES IN BANGUI
Internal displacement figures continue to decline with an estimated 62,579 IDPs living in 35 sites in Bangui as of 23 September – a seven per cent decrease since last month. According to WFP, the rainy season is causing logistical constraints that, coupled with insecurity, are delaying and/or impeding food distributions.
NIGERIA 161,000 IDPs
REGISTERED AND PROFILED IN NORTHEAST
Some 161,000 IDPS have been identified and registered by NEMA, IRC, and Oxfam following insurgency fighting across all three Northeast states (i.e. Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe). Repeated attacks this week and in the past month on Michika and Madagali in northern Adamawa state resulted in an influx of nearly 90,000 IDPs to state capital, Yola where they currently reside with host families.
REGIONAL : CHOLERA 100 PER CENT INCREASE IN CHOLERA CASES IN WEST AFRICA
There is a growing cholera outbreak in West Africa with a doubling of cases as compared to last year. Most affected countries include Nigeria where there are five times more cases. Cases have reportedly spread to Cameroun, Chad and most worryingly to the capital of Ghana, Accra, where over 11,000 cases have been reported since the outbreak began in June 2014.
REGIONAL: EBOLA 20 PER CENT INCREASE IN CASELOAD
To date, there are 6,553 cases (suspected, probable, and confirmed) of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and 3,083 deaths from the virus- a 20 percent increase in cases since last week. The UN Mission for the Emergency Ebola Response (UNMEER) has been deployed to their headquarters in Accra, Ghana, and to their field posts in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. UNHAS flights will be available from Dakar in the coming week.
3,700 EBOLA ORPHANS
On 30 September, UNICEF reported that some 3,700 children have have lost one or both parents to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
US REPORTS FIRST EBOLA CASE
On 1 October, the US reported its first case of Ebola from a man who recently traveled from Liberia. The traveler is currently in quarantine at a hospital in Texas, his contacts have been traced and are being monitored.
