Sierra Leone: ENERGY MINISTRY AIDS EBOLA FIGHT

Amidst the Ebola outbreak, the Ministry of Energy being a crucial arm in the provision of electricity in the country has made a commitment to providing electricity to the Ebola testing Laboratory at Lakka and Solar Street lights at the Ebola treatment centre at Kerry Town.

The Energy Ministry in its recent past has been going through an unbundling system as a way of enhancing an effective and efficient service delivery in the energy sector that also resulted to creating both Distribution and Supply and a Generation and Transmission divisions to aid the process. The Minister of Energy, Ambassador Henry O. Macauley, in fulfillment of the ministry’s commitment and with support of the Transition National Power Authority has installed and commissioned a 315 KVA transformer station at the cost of Two Hundred and Eleven Million, Five Hundred Thousand Leones (Le 211,500,000).

The Minister went on to state that in cognizant of the poor state of the distribution and supply network in the peninsular axis, the Board of Directors and Management of the Transition Nation Power Authority had donated an installed 60 KVA Perkins Generator to the Lakka Isolation Centre to augment and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to the centre. The total cost of the donations, he said, amounted to the tune of Seventy-Nine Million, Nine Hundred Thousand Leones (Le79,900,000).

During his presentation, Ambassador Macauley went on to inform President Koroma that the Energy Ministry has also installed Twenty (20) Solar Lights in Lakka and currently installing Fifty Solar Lights in Kerry Town at a total value of Nine Hundred and Eighty-Seven Million Leones (Le 987,000,000). Mr. Macauley registered his Ministry’s commitment to the fight against the Ebola outbreak.

“In view of the fore-going, I am pleased to inform your Excellency that the grand total of my ministry’s contributions with support of Transition National Power Authority in the fight against the Ebola outbreak is One Billion, Two Hundred and Seventy-Million, Four Hundred Thousand Leones (Le1,278,400,000),” he said.

President Koroma described the donation as timely and thanked the ministry for joining the fight against Ebola. He emphasized the need for everyone to come onboard to strengthen the fight by making the needed sacrifice to get the job done
