Generally above average August rainfall increases prospects for an average harvest in the Sahel
KEY MESSAGES
Below average August rainfall over the central GuineanSudanian zone further compounded the negative effects of mid-season dryness on crops. This persistent rainfall deficit with poor distribution is expected to decrease cereal production across Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin.
Above average August rainfall over the Sudanian-Sahelian zone promoted gains in crop development, particularly in areas where planting was delayed. Consequently, generally average to above average harvest yields are expected here.
Locust breeding zones received above average rainfall for the second consecutive month. Recent rains in these areas in the Sahara will further improve vegetation levels and provide favorable conditions for locust development, however there are no current indications of an imminent locust threat.
